The International women’s day celebration at BUNEC
The International Women’s day is celebrated every year on the 8th of March. This year it was celebrated under the theme “Women in the changing world of work: Planet 50-50 by 2030”. Women’s day 2017 was an opportunity for BUNEC ladies like all others around the world, to reflect on themselves, celebrate what has been done and reflect on what still needs to be done in the field of gender equality.
A sports walk by BUNEC staff on 04/03/2017 marked the beginning of the women’s day activities at BUNEC. The purpose of this walk was not just to observe the day, but to create awareness in various aspects. Amongst them was the need to educate women in the community on the disadvantages of cohabitation, a phenomenon which makes them vulnerable. Women were encouraged to establish marriage certificates so that, in event of any mishap like the death of their partners, they do not find themselves tempted to establish fraudulent marriage certificates in order to have legal rights to anything due them. This sensitization is in hand with the activities of the Ministry of Women Empowerment which carries out collective marriages, one of the reasons being to fight cohabitation.
On the day proper – Wednesday, 8th March 2016, BUNEC ladies assembled at the office premises in their uniformly sewn women’s day fabric. They later took off for the 20th May Boulevard for the march pass which started at about 11:00a.m.The ladies participated full swing in the march pass with a banner bearing the slogan “Universal Registration of Civil Status Events, an Obligation for Equal Sex Opportunities”. This message informed the public that both sexes had equal rights to civil status events. BUNEC ladies attracted a lot of attention from the general public given BUNEC is a new structure, and their beautiful performance.
After the march pass, there was refreshment at BUNEC premises. This part began with an opening speech by the General Manager Mr Yomo Alexandre Marie. In his speech, he made the staff and guests to understand that women and men are equal beings and deserve the same respect, opportunities and are equally responsible for building a better future. The floor was then given to the chief of the training and sensitization unit in the person of Madam Leudjeu Tchounja Chimene who on behalf of the BUNEC ladies welcomed every one, appreciated the significant presence of ladies within the BUNEC family and expressed the desire to have more women present as directors so they can better influence decision making. Nonetheless, the presence of women in management positions is already being practiced and highly encouraged within the structure, with averagely four ladies occupying management positions. The rest of the day was characterised by lots of merry making, lunch, dancing i.e entertainment as a whole.
The women’s day program in its entirety would not have been a great success without the help of the BUNEC Administration. It will therefore be good to sincerely extend heartfelt gratitude to everyone who in one way or the other contributed in making the event an extraordinary one. BUNEC ladies are optimistic that the event had a great impact on them and the community as a whole. Cheers to Womanhood . . . He for she!!!!!!!.
